Biosecurity & BMSB Updates
BMSB Season 2025–26: Korea and Japan Added to Risk List
Effective 1 September 2025, the Republic of Korea and Japan have been added to the emerging risk countries list for Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). While mandatory treatment is not yet required, random inspections will apply to goods from these countries. Importers should prepare for potential delays and ensure documentation is complete and compliant.
Airfreight Inspections from USA and China
Target high-risk goods arriving as airfreight from the USA and China are now subject to random inspections. This may affect clearance times, particularly for electronics, machinery, and automotive parts.
New Treatment Option
Ethyl Formate has been approved as a new offshore fumigation method for BMSB compliance. This offers an alternative to traditional treatments and may help reduce bottlenecks during peak season.
Geopolitical Impacts on Australian Imports
Israel–Iran–USA Conflict
Recent targeted strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure have led to a global spike in oil prices. While Australia does not directly import Iranian oil, the ripple effect has increased domestic fuel costs, with logistics operators reporting a rise of approximately 12 cents per litre. This is impacting freight and transport costs for Australian importers, particularly those in fuel-intensive sectors such as agriculture, construction, and retail distribution.
Port Operations & Shipping Disruptions
Singapore Transhipment Delays
Singapore port congestion has worsened due to rerouting around the Red Sea and increased vessel dwell times. For Australian importers, this has resulted in transhipment delays of up to two weeks, especially for cargo originating in Europe and the US East Coast. These delays are affecting container availability and increasing demurrage risks, particularly for time-sensitive goods such as perishables and seasonal retail stock.
Global Port Disruptions Affecting Australian Imports
Australian importers are currently navigating:
- Blank sailings and port omissions across Asia–Oceania routes, reducing available vessel space.
- Transhipment delays at Singapore and Port Klang, adding 2–3 weeks to delivery schedules.
- European port congestion, driven by low Rhine River levels and labour shortages.
- Red Sea crisis, with rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope increasing transit times and fuel surcharges.
- Space constraints and equipment shortages, with global container cancellation rates rising and carriers prioritising high-yield cargo.
These disruptions are contributing to volatile freight rates and unpredictable delivery timelines.
Silk Logistics Takeover
DP World’s acquisition of Silk Logistics has raised concerns about market concentration in Australia’s inland logistics sector. With DP World now controlling both port terminals and key warehousing assets, importers using independent freight forwarders may face higher container handling fees and reduced access to competitive services. Some operators have already reported increased pricing for container unpacking and local transport, particularly in Melbourne and Brisbane.
Golden Week 2025 – Prepare Now
China’s Golden Week holiday will run from 1–7 October, with many factories and offices closing for the duration. This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival on 6 October will extend the shutdown to 8 October. Australian importers should expect:
- Freight cost increases of up to 50% on key trade lanes as shippers rush to meet pre-holiday deadlines.
- Port congestion in China, with delays that may extend well beyond the holiday period.
- Reduced production and slower warehouse operations, affecting order fulfilment and dispatch.
- Airfreight demand surge, as businesses seek alternatives to delayed sea freight.
We strongly recommend planning shipments early, securing space now, and considering airfreight options for critical cargo.
Freight Rate Trends
Sea Freight
- USA East & West Coast: Rates have declined slightly but remain volatile due to blank sailings.
- China: Rates are softening due to excess capacity and weather-related delays.
- UK & Europe: Rates are fluctuating due to Red Sea rerouting and port congestion.
- Hong Kong: Rates remain stable, though space is tightening ahead of Golden Week.
Airfreight
Space constraints persist from China and the USA. While rates from LAX have increased, JFK and MIA have seen slight declines. Inspections and rerouting due to Middle East tensions are contributing to delays and cost increases.
Australian Import Challenges – August 2025
Importers are seeing:
- Trade diversion: Sourcing shifts from China to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Mexico due to tariff and compliance changes.
- Price volatility: Adjustments in global supply chains are affecting the cost of goods imported into Australia.
- Operational pressure: Australian ports are experiencing vessel bunching and reduced productivity, leading to higher landside costs and limited slot availability at empty container parks.
