COVID-19 (Coronavirus) update – 16th March 2020
Yesterday the Australian Government announced strict new changes to passengers arriving from overseas. These changes included at least a mandatory 14 day isolation for all arriving passengers, irrespective of nationality, as well as a 30 day exclusion for cruise ships. The effect of such laws will reduce overseas tourism and therefore reduce people arriving into Australia. These laws are being mirrored around the world and therefore reducing the movement of people and hopefully minimising the virus.
The new laws do not affect cargo, however with the reduction in movement of passengers there will be mass cancellations of flights between countries. Given most airfreight shipments around the world travel on passenger aircraft the knock on effect on the movement of airfreight will be substantial.
It was announced over the weekend that Qantas and Virgin are making savage cuts to their international flights, this will just be the beginning as most other airlines around the world are also cutting capacity.
If you are planning on moving cargo via airfreight please liaise with VoxLogistics as early as possible so staff can assist in planning the movement of the goods. Space into Australia will be tight and rates will escalate.
With reduction of space, there will be a ripple effect for aircraft, trucking and vessel space, which puts a greater emphasis on planning ahead and we are here to work collaboratively to move your goods in the time and mode that is required.
