🎄 Christmas Season – Plan Early

If your cargo is scheduled to arrive during the Christmas/New Year period, please advise us of your closure dates and handling instructions as soon as possible.
Communication before Christmas is essential to avoid unexpected costs such as storage or demurrage. VoxGroup will remain open throughout December, closing only on public holidays. Early coordination ensures smooth deliveries and cost control.

Local Port & Transport Updates

  • Australian ports: Sydney & Brisbane delays 2–3 days, Melbourne & Fremantle 1–2 days due to vessel bunching and congestion.
  • Cost increases across Australia:
    • Wharf handling: +8–10% nationally
    • Local transport: +8%, driven by fuel and labour costs
    • Tailgate inspections: +12%
    • Ancillary charges (booking fees, container handling, compliance): +6–8% These increases are already in effect and impacting landed costs—plan accordingly.

🛠 Proposed Changes to PAMA Regulations – Direct Impact on Importers

The Ports & Maritime Administration Amendment (Freight Reform) is expected to take effect early 2026.
Ramifications for Australian importers:

  • Port service fee increases of approximately 5–10% for navigation, berthing, and mooring charges due to new licensing requirements for towage, bunkering, and lines-handling.
  • Additional administrative costs for environmental reporting (emissions and noise data).
These changes will directly raise port-related costs for imported cargo, increasing landed costs per container.

🛣 PBLIS Mandatory Standards – Direct Impact on Importers

Updates to the Port Botany Landside Improvement Strategy are being phased in:

  • Performance-based penalties and incentives for truck arrivals and container handling will apply from late 2025, increasing costs for missed time slots or inefficient handling.
  • New compliance systems for truck identification and scheduling will introduce extra booking and administration fees.
  • Annual CPI-linked increases to landside charges will continue.
Ramification: Importers should expect higher landside costs and stricter compliance requirements, which could add several hundred dollars per container if delays occur.

📈 Freight Rates & Capacity Insights

Sea Freight

  • USA West Coast → Australia: Rates have risen 5–7%; space utilisation is around 85%, with rollovers and blank sailings adding pressure.
  • Hong Kong → Australia: Rates remain stable, but space is tight at 82% utilisation.
  • China → Australia: Rates have decreased by 10% since late November; premium services remain near full.
  • Europe → Australia: Rates are stable, though space fluctuates ±4% due to port congestion.

Air Freight

  • Asia–Australia lanes are operating at 90–95% utilisation. Premium and time-critical shipments require early booking.
  • No airspace closures reported; domestic air capacity remains stable.

🌍 Global Trade & Geopolitical Impacts

  • Singapore & Tanjung Pelepas: Vessel delays averaging 3–6 days due to yard utilisation above 90%.
  • Europe: Antwerp and Felixstowe delays 2–4 days; Southampton had a one-day shutdown due to severe weather.
  • Africa: Durban and Cape Town delays remain at 4–7 days.
  • Suez Canal: Transits have resumed, but routing remains sensitive to regional tensions.

🤝 Australia–EU FTA Progress

Negotiations are nearing completion, with remaining issues around beef quotas and geographical indications. The agreement is expected by Spring 2026.
