Port Congestion – USA
As we come out of Lunar New Year and hopefully some return to reasonably normal conditions from China and other areas of Asia our focus has turned to both the USA and Europe as areas of concern for the freight industry.
Within the USA there is still substantial port congestion and delays which are adding, at times, weeks to the transit times for goods coming to Australia. There has been any number of pictures showing anywhere up to 40 odd vessels sitting off the coast at Long Beach.
Whilst there doesn’t appear to be as many equipment problems in the USA actually getting the equipment onto a vessel where delays are occurring.
Space and equipment – Europe
When we turn our attention to Europe we are continuing to have the problems with both space and equipment. Vessel space has been extremely tight and the lead time for bookings has extended out to between 2-4 weeks before the goods can get on a vessel.
In addition to this there is also equipment imbalance issues through Europe and whilst some companies are charging an “equipment imbalance fee” this is not assisting in making certain there is the right equipment within the right ports.
As one partner in Europe advised “we have to fight for every single empty container”
What this all means is we have to plan ahead, allow lead times within the supply chain and work with our partners to provide the most efficient transit of your goods. Please continue to speak to us about the alternatives available for your goods and provide notice as early as possible so we can book the space and equipment needed.
We will continue to keep our clients updated as to market movements and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us
Take care and stay safe.
