š Global Trade & Geopolitical Impacts Overview
Red Sea Diversions Continue
Shipping lines continue to avoid the Red Sea due to security risks, rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. This has extended transit times by 10ā14 days and increased bunker fuel surcharges, which are now being passed on to importers globally, including those shipping into Australia.
IndiaāPakistan Maritime Tensions
While no new escalations have occurred in the past fortnight, Indian ports such as Nhava Sheva and Mundra remain under heightened security protocols. Vessel scheduling remains cautious, and importers should continue to monitor for potential disruptions.
IsraelāIranāUS Conflict
The Strait of Hormuz remains operational but volatile. Recent GPS spoofing incidents have impacted vessel navigation systems, prompting some carriers to reroute or delay transits. Insurance premiums for cargo through this corridor remain elevated.
Trump Tariffs ā No New Impact on Australian Imports
There have been no new tariff changes affecting Australian imports under the Trump administrationās latest trade measures. Australian importers remain unaffected at this time.
āļø Airspace Closures & Rerouting
The escalating Middle East conflict has led to widespread flight disruptions:
- Airlines are rerouting flights away from Dubai and Doha, and airspace over conflict zones is closed.
- Australian passengers and air cargo are affected, with some carriers waiving change fees and adjusting schedules to avoid risk zones.
- Locally, the Australian Airspace Policy Statement 2025 is under review, with a focus on integrating uncrewed aerial systems and improving situational awareness for safer operations.
š¢ Port Disruptions & Operational Updates
Evergreenās Ever Lunar Incident
On 1 August, the Ever Lunar lost 50 containers overboard while anchored at Callao Port, Peru. Although no hazardous materials were involved, the incident caused a temporary port closure and minor delays to connecting services, including those bound for Australia.
Australian Port Status
- Fremantle: A 48-hour pilot strike is scheduled for 18 August. The strike is expected to delay vessel berthing and container handling. Importers using Fremantle should prepare for potential backlogs.
- Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane: All operating normally with no reported disruptions.
Global Port Conditions
- Europe: Tanger Med and Rotterdam are experiencing berthing delays of up to 6 days due to yard congestion and vessel bunching.
- Asia: Chittagong continues to face delays due to monsoonal weather and limited yard space. Japan and the US West Coast are recovering from tsunami alerts following a major earthquake near Kamchatka on 30 July.
ā“ļø Transhipment Delays: Singapore to Australia
Singapore remains a key transhipment hub for Australian-bound cargo, but delays are mounting.
- Berthing delays of 2+ days are common due to vessel bunching and off-schedule arrivals.
- Transhipment dwell times are stretching up to 2ā3 weeks, particularly for COSCO shipments under FIFO policies.
- Blank sailings are expected to reduce capacity by an average of 4% through August, impacting space availability and scheduling.
š¦ Container Space Constraints
Booking container space into Australia is becoming increasingly difficult across key trade lanes.
- AsiaāAustralia services are facing tight space due to vessel downsizing and blank sailings.
- US West CoastāAustralia routes are experiencing high utilisation, with some carriers reporting full bookings up to 3 weeks in advance.
- EuropeāAustralia lanes are impacted by port congestion and equipment shortages, leading to unpredictable space availability.
Importers are advised to book early, consider alternative routings, and maintain flexibility with carrier options.
š Biosecurity Update
Australiaās biosecurity system has responded to rising seasonal pest detections and ongoing disease outbreaks overseas.
- Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks in Europe have led to revised import conditions for affected goods.
- Increased cargo and mail volumes have placed pressure on screening systems, but operational capacity has been scaled to meet demand.
- Importers are encouraged to stay up to date with evolving entry conditions and ensure documentation is complete to avoid clearance delays.
š¦ Freight Rate Trends (LCL, 20ā FCL, 40ā FCL)
| Region of Export | Current Trend | Notes |
| China | Softening | Rates remain low due to reduced demand and cautious sentiment around US tariffs. Carriers are blanking sailings to stabilise pricing. |
| Hong Kong | Stable | No major fluctuations reported. Space availability remains consistent. |
| USA West Coast | Softening | Rates have dipped slightly due to lower booking volumes. Space is readily available. |
| USA East Coast | Slightly Higher | Rates remain elevated due to longer transit times and tighter capacity. |
| UK & Europe | Fluctuating | Rates are volatile due to port congestion and seasonal demand. Expect continued variability through August. |
š Industry Trends & Risks
- Container Losses on the Rise: Evergreenās recent incidents (Ever Lunar and Ever Feat) are part of a broader trend. Over 570 containers were lost at sea in 2024, prompting the IMO to mandate reporting from January 2026.
- Cybersecurity in Logistics: The IsraelāIran conflict has triggered cyberattacks targeting logistics infrastructure. Importers are advised to review their digital risk protocols.
- Carrier Capacity Management: Shipping lines are actively managing capacity through blank sailings and service reductions to maintain rate stability, even during peak season.
